Students prepare to head back to school and teacher honored as 2025 Teacher of the Year

Students will grab their backpacks and head back to the classroom on Aug. 5 for the first day of school.
The Bibb County School District kicked off the 2024-25 school year with a convocation at the Macon Coliseum Wednesday.
Superintendent Dan Sims spoke at the convocation and Jeremy Pietrocini, a senior consultant for Gallup, offered the keynote address.
At the convocation, the district announced Sarah Mallett, a career, technical and agricultural education (CTAE) teacher as the 2025 Teacher of the Year. Mallett, who has taught for four years, teaches audio, video, technology and film at Howard Middle School.
“I am absolutely overjoyed and blessed by this opportunity,” Mallett said. “I did not see it coming, but I love this district and I love each and every one of the students that I teach.”
As a CTAE teacher, Mallett helps students who may not attend college after graduation or those who are going to the military to explore different job fields. Students develop job skills in communication, film and technology, news broadcast, marketing and business.
“It is absolutely the best feeling knowing that you have played a part in a child’s journey and a child’s growth in whatever field they choose after high school,” said Mallett, who explained that her students “always have a seat at my table,” and can count on her for support.
Mallett, along with the Media Specialist of the Year, Counselor of the Year and Social Worker of the Year, will be honored at the Grand Opera House Oct. 1.
Before the first day of school, parents and students can participate in the elementary school open house on Aug. 2 from 3:30-6 p.m. and the middle and high school open house on Aug. 1 from 3:30-6 p.m.
Parents and their kids can also look forward to a drive-thru PBIS Back to School Bash at the Ed Defore Sports Complex. The event, Aug. 2 at 9 a.m., will provide an opportunity for families to find school supplies, school uniform shirts and additional community resources.
