County planners seek public input in comprehensive plan update
The comprehensive plan, required by state law and updated every five years, guides and forecasts several topics integral to county development, including transportation, economic development, housing, land use and quality of life.

The Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission will get resident input on its updated comprehensive plan, which is used to inform future decisions on land-use regulations, during a public meeting May 14.
The comprehensive plan, required by state law and updated every five years, guides and forecasts several topics integral to county development, including transportation, economic development, housing, land use and quality of life.
Previous plans, including the most recent one from 2022, also outlined goals and opportunities in each of those areas, along with historic and cultural resources, demographic data, internet speeds and coverage, potential projects to serve the community and more.
“The comprehensive plan helps our commissioners … make informed decisions on what the future land use of a community looks like,” said Greg Brown, planning director for the commission.
The plan will take effect in 2027, but the commission has already begun the process of researching and collecting community input. Planners held a kickoff meeting in November and another meeting in March to understand transportation needs.
The May 14 meeting is focused on quality of life — including amenities such as public parks and community centers — and economic development, which addresses job and industry benefits as well as needs.
To formulate the plan, officials also consult a steering committee made up of community members and look at existing plans formed by other agencies.
The plan is also reviewed by the Middle Georgia Regional Commission, a group that provides professional assistance to Macon-Bibb County and 10 other county governments.
“Community input is a major focus of the comprehensive planning process,” Brown said.
Next Thursday’s meeting will be held at the Macon Housing Authority Family Investment Center at 905 Main St.
Additional community input meetings will take place through the end of the year. A draft of the plan will be assembled by March 2027.
