Events in Macon to celebrate Black History Month

Check out the list of events and celebrations throughout Macon in honor of this year’s Black History Month.

February is Black History Month, and folks can find a variety of events in the Macon community to honor and celebrate Black history and culture.

Below is a list of events in Macon:

Tubman African American Museum

  • Free admission on Saturdays through February
  • Living Legends the Ancestors Speak Reenactments on Saturdays from 2- 4 p.m.
  • Feb. 20 — Black History Month Celebration with music by DJ Skillz. $10 admission. 5- 8 p.m.

Wesleyan College

  • Feb. 7
    • Opening of “The Water Spirit Will Take Us Home: The Story of Igbo”: The original exhibit is on loan from the Tubman Museum of African American Art to Wesleyan College at the Downtown Leadership Lab through Friday, Feb. 21.
    • Equity and Inclusion Discovery Day: Dive into meaningful discussions and activities centered around themes of equity and inclusion. Featuring E Pluribus Unum and the First Friday Igbo Landing Podcast and Exhibit at the Leadership Lab.
  • Feb. 11 — View, Chat, and Chew: Enjoy a thought-provoking viewing session followed by engaging discussions over a shared meal. This session will feature the short film “Good Hair: Perceptions of Racism” from noon. to 1 p.m. at Manget.
  • Feb. 19 — Campus African Attire Day: Celebrate cultural heritage and identity by wearing traditional African attire. Judging for prizes will take place in the café from noon to 1 p.m.
  • Feb. 26 — Black History Music, Fashion, and Talent Program: Experience a dynamic showcase of music, fashion and talent, highlighting the richness of African American culture. The event will feature student singers, poets, models and a special guest speaker from the community from noon-1p.m. at the OSP Dining Hall.

Mercer University

  • Feb. 5-28 — “More Than a Month: You are Black History”: The Tarver Library will have several resource-sharing displays set up throughout the second floor. Students will be invited to share notable Black leaders, artists, musicians, authors, professionals and content creators at these displays. Staff also will share weekly recommended resource lists — featuring books, media, games, podcasts and more — that emphasize current and historical leaders and content by Black creators.
  • Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. — Black History Month Trivia: For this QuadWorks event, students are invited to test their knowledge with a fun game of trivia while celebrating Black History Month in the Connell Student Center.
  • Feb. 17 from 8 to 11 p.m. — Organization of Black Students Annual Gala: Students are invited to enjoy food and music and represent their zodiac sign during the Organization of Black Students’ annual gala in Penfield Hall. This year’s theme is “A Night of Celestial Bodies.” Dress is formal attire.
  • Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. — Melanated Bears/Canvasing Black History: This QuadWorks event will promote cultural awareness about Black history by allowing students to create painted handprints or squares with famous African American initials or sayings that have inspired them. The handprints will later be pieced together to make a mural. The event will be in Conference Room Three in the Connell Student Center.
  • Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. — Black History Month Poetry and Pottery: QuadWorks will provide students with premade vases to paint, and a slideshow featuring vase painting designs in African culture will help provide inspiration. Conference Room One in the Connell Student Center.

  • Feb. 8 at 1:30 p.m. — African American Heritage Tour

Douglass Theatre

  • Sunday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. — “Sing Brother, Sing Sister!!”:  A celebration of Negro Spirituals through an a capella showcase.  The event honors the African American musical heritage of traditional, yet sometimes forgotten, soul stirring songs. The 2025 line up includes: Elijah Bell, Bishop JD Means (Atlanta), and the Carner Sisters. Free to the public. RSVP at tinyurl.com/singbrosingsis
