Mary Pinson Florist is located on 1090 Washington Avenue. The storefront has changed many times over the years. The building used to be home to Joshua Cup coffee shop, Capitol Cycle and Chichesters at College Hill Pharmacy. Jason Vorhees / The Melody.

My wife and I celebrated our 43rd anniversary last week. We were married at the Newton Chapel on the Mercer University campus, just a block from the offices of The Macon Melody.

I bought her wedding ring at Segall & Son’s showroom on Riverside Drive. (It didn’t serve cornbread and green beans, like the “other’’ S&S — popular cafeteria down the street. Segall & Son’s was one of those catalog showrooms of the 1970s and ‘80s. There was another called Service Merchandise on Eisenhower Parkway.

Businesses come and go, but it has been interesting to watch how many times that Segall building at 2490 Riverside has been repurposed and reincarnated over the years.

It served as Crandall Junior College.  It was a Cellular One during the Flood of ‘94, when that stretch of Riverside was almost entirely underwater. It later became a Verizon Store and is now a business office for Atrium Health Navicent.

Yollah Social Kitchen and Garden is located on 894 College Street. The restaurant wasn’t always an eatery and garden, however, it used to be Milady Dry Cleaners. Jason Vorhees / The Melody.

Another building with a unique history is the Piedmont Urgent Health Center at the corner of Ingleside and Corbin avenues.

It began as a Citizens & Southern (C&S) Bank. It later morphed into Ingleside Mortuary and the Central Georgia Women’s Health Center.

As part of my ongoing series of “Afterlife” quizzes, I challenge you to match this list of current Macon businesses with what they were in a previous life.
