Macon to attempt kazoo world record, again
The evening will be headlined by appearances from comedian Ian Karmel and internet phenomenon Brett Ambler, also known as the “Kazoo Kid.”

Macon will attempt to make its mark on the Guinness Book of World Records on March 28 at the amphitheater with the largest kazoo ensemble.
The evening will be headlined by appearances from comedian Ian Karmel and internet phenomenon Brett Ambler, also known as the “Kazoo Kid.”
Visit Macon will provide kazoos for everyone to play for the record attempt at 6 p.m. Gates open at 4 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online or at the Macon Centreplex Box Office for $5.
The current record for the largest kazoo ensemble was set in 2011 in London with 5,190 participants. At capacity, the amphitheater holds 10,000.
Macon failed twice to beat the world record in the past, once in 2006 and another time in 2007.
This time around organizers are much more optimistic.
“This is the best one [attempt] I’ve ever seen,” said Rick Hubbard, the leading kazoo man who will be conducting the ensemble.
The kazoos being provided are from the company Hubbard founded, Kazoobie Kazoos Factory, based in Beaufort, South Carolina.
The record attempt, which will take place during the Cherry Blossom Festival, has optimal conditions for attracting a crowd, Hubbard said.
Hubbard, who has been involved in several other kazoo related record attempts, said the biggest challenge will be meeting the Guiness World of Records’ “strict regulations.”
To make sure everything goes smoothly, organizers have consulted with an official Guinness adjudicator to ensure everyone’s participation is counted toward the record.
“It would probably be easier to get a record for how many kazoos one person could eat,” Hubbard said.
The ensemble is required to play for a minimum of five minutes, a requirement that is an important factor for song selection made apparent when Hubbard led an attempt at a ballpark where participants played “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” for five minutes straight.
However, because Macon has “so much great music,” Hubbard said, the ensemble has a wide selection of songs to choose from, and the track curated for the record attempt will include hits from Macon musicians like “Ramblin’ Man”, “Tutti Frutti”, “Get Up Offa That Thing”, “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” and “Hard to Handle”.
The track, when finalized, will be made available to folks to practice ahead of time.
