‘Power’ series paints full portrait of Macon-Bibb authorities
What emerged over the 11 installments of The Melody’s “Power” series — a primer and 10 in-depth reports — was a portrait of institutions that have quietly grown in size, reach and consequence, often with little public attention to match.

When Senior Reporter Laura Corley set out to examine the local authority boards that govern much of daily life in Macon-Bibb County, the scope of what she’d find wasn’t entirely clear. What emerged over the 11 installments of our “Power” series — a primer and 10 in-depth reports — was a portrait of institutions that have quietly grown in size, reach and consequence, often with little public attention to match.
The series opened with the Macon Housing Authority, an agency whose mission has been fundamentally reshaped by decades of federal funding pullbacks and shifting national priorities. It closed with the Macon Water Authority, an organization responsible not just for the rates residents pay on their water and sewer bills but for managing a vast infrastructure system that, in many places, has outlived its useful life.
In between, the reporting revealed a consistent pattern: boards with real power over housing, land, economic development, transit, health care and public resources — power that has often expanded over time — operating at the edges of public awareness.
The strong community response reminded us why our work matters. You read these stories, shared them and asked questions. Some of you learned for the first time that these boards existed at all.
That’s our job. Journalism isn’t about telling you what to think — it’s about making sure you have the full picture. We’re excited to continue that work.
