Macon’s flag football season is wrapping up, which begs the question: who were the best squads in Macon this year?

That discussion must begin, as it has in years past, with the Westside Seminoles.

The program led by head coach Josh Grube, also Westside’s boys basketball coach, has been the cream of the crop in Bibb County since many local schools began playing flag football.

The Seminoles proved their might again this season. They are currently 14-0 with two more games to play, putting them in excellent position to finish in first place in Division 2 Area 3. It would be Westside’s fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs in their four years of existence.

The Seminoles also finished the regular season undefeated last year. The team had a solid playoff run, reaching the Elite 8 before bowing out against Dodge County in the third round for their only loss all year.

Many contributors this year are the same. While Westside lost key players like Kaila Lucas to graduation after last year, star receiver and defender Dominique Billue came back better than ever this season. The sophomore has 13 touchdowns this year and an incredible 13 interceptions — both good for team highs.

The Seminoles are not the only Bibb County team with playoff aspirations, however.

The Northeast Raiders have put together a solid season this year, notching a 9-4 record overall and a 5-2 mark in region play. That record has included a 7-3 run over their last 10 games and a five-game winning streak nestled in the middle of the schedule.

Northeast has no statistics listed on MaxPreps but has been a defense-first squad this season, shutting out four opponents and allowing more than 13 points only three times all year. Two of those shutouts came against crosstown rivals Rutland and Howard.

The Raiders are currently in third place in Area 3 behind Westside and Pike County, though they are tied with Mary Persons at 5-2 in the region. Both teams have two region games left. Northeast is set to play Westside on Monday and Southwest on Wednesday to finish the season.

Central and Southwest both need crucial wins and some stumbles by teams ahead of them to make the playoffs. The Chargers and Patriots are both 3-3 in region play as of Monday. The Patriots could jump Northeast if they win Wednesday’s game and the Raiders lose to Westside.

The top team from Area 3 — likely Westside — will play the fourth-place team from Area 5, which would be T.H.R.I.V.E. Christian Academy as of Monday. T.H.R.I.V.E. is located in Stone Mountain and, while it has not faced the Seminoles this season, lost 33-13 to Northeast earlier this year.
