GDOT to rebuild Bass Road railroad overpass

The section of Bass Road between Rivoli Drive and Forsyth Road will be shut down starting Feb. 17 for an $11 million project to replace the bridge that goes over railroad tracks.

The one-mile stretch of Bass Road will be closed for six months as the Georgia Department of Transportation clears the old bridge and installs a new one. Residents living within the road closure area will still have access to it but won’t be able to use the bridge.

Traffic will be rerouted toward the Rivoli Drive and Tucker Road intersection diverting traffic toward Forsyth Road. A county survey crew closed the intersection earlier this year after a woman died when her car was struck by an oncoming train.

“Traffic studies were done to determine the best route for detouring traffic,” GDOT spokesperson Gina Snider told The Melody. “Also, locals will know other routes to take that will relieve traffic congestion.”

GDOT deemed the bridge to be outdated and structurally deficient.
