Macon Periods Easier supporters and community members hit the dance floor for a “homecoming” event Oct. 17, raising money and awareness to support the grassroots organization.

The nonprofit — focused on ending period poverty, or the challenge faced by individuals who cannot afford menstrual products — raised more than $9,500, according to event organizer and board member Sabrina Hom.

The annual dance hosted at Overlook on First in downtown Macon included catering from community sponsors, a silent auction and a DJ setting the vibes.

“It was a very big night for us,” Hom wrote. “And given our expanding operations, we needed it!”

Founded in 2017, Macon Periods Easier began with a small “period party” to pack bags of menstrual products for donation.

It has since grown in reach — providing 35,000 pads, 18,000 tampons and 45,000 liners to those in need this year, a majority of whom are students in Bibb County public schools.

The event nearly doubled the volunteer organization’s revenue, Hom added. The group is now in search of a donor to help fund a storage unit or donate a space so the organization can continue to provide free menstrual products to the community.

Ty Battle, a board member for the LGBTQ+ organization Navigating Omitted Minds Overtime, received the title of homecoming royalty that evening.

“It’s so important that we support organizations like Macon Periods Easier that give back to our community,” Battle said. “We need each other.”
