A new chapter for The Melody

Our team and coverage are moving to The Telegraph. Make sure you look for The Melody's community-first journalism as a section highlighting the people, places and moments that are the rhythm of Macon.

During my time learning to become a Maconite, I honestly had no idea what was waiting for me. Like a lot of people, I thought I was moving to a small Southern city. What I discovered was something much bigger. I found a community that rallies around its locally owned restaurants, is deeply saddened when a restaurant closes, cheers for small businesses and believes that some of life’s best conversations happen around a dinner table.

I started sharing my restaurant adventures on Facebook simply because I enjoyed supporting local businesses and encouraging people to try someplace new. I never imagined those posts would lead to a weekly column in The Macon Melody, and I certainly never imagined someone would eventually hand me a microphone. Yet here we are, and I couldn’t be more excited to share what’s next.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be launching a brand-new podcast in partnership with Visit Macon and 100.9 The Creek. If you’ve never listened to a podcast before, don’t let the name intimidate you. Think of it as sitting around a table with friends, sharing a great meal while listening to incredible stories. The only difference is you can listen while you’re driving to work, taking a walk, relaxing at home or cooking dinner.

Visit Macon spends every day introducing visitors to everything that makes our community special, while The Creek shares the stories, music and personalities that make Middle Georgia unique. Together, we’ll be adding another voice to that conversation — one delicious story at a time.

There are countless food podcasts across the country. Some critique restaurants. Some teach cooking techniques. Others interview celebrity chefs or spend an hour debating whether pineapple belongs on pizza. That’s not what this podcast is going to be. This podcast is about people. It’s about the family that took a chance and opened their dream restaurant. It’s about the chef who learned to cook from their grandmother. It’s about the bartender who somehow remembers everyone’s favorite drink, the server who has become part of a family’s weekly tradition and the baker who starts work long before the rest of us wake up. Of course, we’ll talk about amazing food, signature dishes and hidden gems throughout Macon and the surrounding communities, but more importantly, we’ll tell the stories behind the menus. Every restaurant has a story, and those stories deserve to be told. Maconites know good food when we see it so why not talk about it too?

One week, we might sit down with the owner of a restaurant that’s been serving the community for generations. The next week, we may introduce you to the newest hidden gem that everyone will soon be talking about. We might take you behind the scenes of a busy kitchen during the dinner rush, discover how a signature recipe came to be, or ask a chef what they really think when someone asks for ketchup on a perfectly cooked steak. (Don’t worry…I’ll ask the questions everyone else is thinking.) We’ll laugh, we’ll learn and every now and then we’ll probably discover something that surprises all of us.

The best part is that this podcast isn’t about me, it’s about our community. I want to meet the people who make Middle Georgia’s food scene so special. If you’re a restaurant owner, chef, pitmaster, baker, bartender, server, food truck operator, coffee shop owner or anyone with a great story to tell, I want to hear from you. If you’re a foodie who has discovered an incredible little restaurant that deserves more attention, I want to hear from you too. Some of the best stories aren’t found in advertisements; they’re shared by the people who experience them every day.

Looking back, it’s amazing how quickly life can change. A little over a year ago, I was simply a guy posting pictures of my dinner on Facebook because I wanted to support local restaurants. Thanks to your encouragement, those posts became a newspaper column. Now, together with Visit Macon and 100.9 The Creek, we’re taking that conversation to a new platform. I don’t pretend to know every great restaurant in Middle Georgia, and I certainly don’t have all the answers. What I do know is that food has an incredible way of bringing people together. Complete strangers become friends over a shared meal. Families celebrate life’s biggest moments around a table. Communities are built one conversation at a time, and more often than not, those conversations begin with, “Have you ever eaten at…?” What I can be sure of is this… the Macon food scene has changed my life and I want to share these experiences with anyone who will listen.

So, consider this your invitation. Pull up a chair. Tell me your story. Recommend your favorite restaurant. Introduce me to someone who deserves to be in the spotlight. Let’s celebrate the people who make Middle Georgia one of the most exciting places to eat, one conversation at a time. I truly believe the best stories are still waiting to be told, and I can’t wait to share them with all of you. Until next time, Macon…let’s eat… and talk about it.
