Southwest stays perfect, wins region opener in convincing fashion over Washington County
The top team in many A-Division I preseason polls continued to roll early this season as region play began in Macon.

As the clock struck 7:30 p.m. at Southwest High School Tuesday night, the gymnasium was buzzing with excitement as the crowd gathered for the first Region 2 high school basketball game between the Southwest Patriots and the Washington County Golden Hawks.
The game started off with both teams trading buckets, each possession neck and neck. But as the quarter progressed, Southwest was able to make the little bit of separation it needed to continue to thrive throughout the game. At the end of the first, Southwest led Washington County by a score of 14-11.
As the second quarter began, both teams continued to display their skills and determination. The Golden Hawks saw themselves falling behind as Southwest found itself up by nearly 20 going into the half.
Chase Dupree, one of the leaders for the Patriots, was outstanding as he led the way with 22 points. Dupree was quick with his decision making, able to get to his spots on the floor and knock down shots to get his teammates involved when shown an immense amount of pressure.
The game continued at a frenetic pace favoring the Patriots as they continued to pour onto their lead. This was done with the help of senior guard Brandon Ashley, who contributed 18 points on 6 of 13 shooting.
The Patriots trailed off in the fourth quarter, losing some steam and letting the Golden Hawks gain a little ground, but the Southwest still came away with the region victory.
Following the game, head coach Monquencio Hardnett shared his opinions on the 66-53 win.
“It doesn’t make me feel good because we were up 20-plus and we only scored, I think, six points in the fourth quarter,” Hardnett said. “So the goals that we have set, which is winning the state championship, we can’t win it that way.”
Washington County’s record will drop to 0-2 with the loss. The Golden Hawks will face Hancock County Friday night before a Saturday game against ACE.
Southwest improved to 6-0 with this being its 11th straight home win dating back to last season. The Patriots will return home to face the Worth County Rams on Saturday at 3 p.m.
