Summer has arrived in Middle Georgia. School’s out, the sun’s up and families are gearing up for a season full of potential. But let’s be honest, summer can also get chaotic. Between trying to entertain the kids, plan meals, organize outings and preserve some semblance of structure, the “lazy days of summer” can quickly feel overwhelming. Luckily, artificial intelligence (AI) is stepping in as an unexpected but very welcome assistant.

You don’t need to be a tech expert to tap into AI’s benefits. With just a smartphone or tablet and a few well-chosen apps, families can discover local adventures, whip up creative meals, keep kids learning and entertained and even turn memories into beautiful keepsakes. Here are some ways AI can help your family have a smarter, more enjoyable summer without even leaving town.

Day trips made easy

Not every family is heading to the beach or mountains this summer and that’s okay. Sometimes, the best adventures are right in your own backyard. AI can help you find them.

Apps like Google Maps and Eventbrite use AI to suggest nearby activities based on your location and interests. Whether it’s a children’s museum, a pop-up festival or a shaded walking trail you’ve never explored, these apps curate options that are close, affordable and fun for the whole family.

Want to avoid the crowds or make the most of a cloudy day? Weather-integrated AI apps can help you plan around the forecast, while tools like Yelp and TripAdvisor now use AI-generated summaries to highlight family-friendly
local attractions.

Let AI be your sous chef

Dinner planning in the summer can feel like an endless loop of “What do we have?” and “Do we have to eat that again?” Enter AI-powered meal planners. Apps like Mealime and Whisk offer a brilliant solution: enter the ingredients you already have and the app will suggest meals your family might love. AI can even account for dietary restrictions, picky eaters and time limits.

Many of these tools go a step further, generating shopping lists and even connecting with grocery delivery services. And if your kids like helping in the kitchen, some apps offer step-by-step visual instructions that feel more like an interactive game than a chore.

Want to shake things up? Try an AI chatbot like ChatGPT to plan a “theme night.” For example: “Make me a Hawaiian-themed dinner menu with music and games for a family of four.” You might just
create a new tradition.

Creative projects and DIY magic

When it’s too hot to be outside or you’re just trying to keep screen time in check, AI can help you unlock hours of meaningful, creative fun.

Apps like Canva for Education, Tinkercad and Khan Academy Kids offer AI-enhanced tools for drawing, building and learning. Canva’s AI tools can guide your children through designing their own summer postcards or posters. Tinkercad lets them dip their toes into 3D design and engineering (even without a 3D printer), while Khan Academy’s AI tutor helps reinforce school-year learning in a gamified, personalized way.

AI can also suggest family-friendly science experiments, art projects or journaling prompts. Tools like ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini allow you to input basic details like your kids’ ages or interests and receive tailored activity ideas that spark curiosity without adding to your to-do list.

Family memories, upgraded

Summer memories fade fast unless they’re captured and that’s where AI tools shine. Google Photos, Apple Photos and Adobe Express use AI to automatically group your photos by date, location or even who’s in them. They can suggest the best shots, remove blurry images and even generate highlight videos complete with music and captions.

Want something you can hold in your hands? Services like Chatbooks or Shutterfly now incorporate AI to help you create beautiful printed photo books in minutes, automatically selecting layouts, writing playful captions and organizing your memories into a professional-looking design.

If your kids are into storytelling, you can go a step further and use AI to create a custom digital storybook. Feed a few photos and a short description into tools like Storybird or even ChatGPT paired with image generators, and you’ve got the foundation for a bedtime tale starring your own family.

Managing the madness

Even with all the fun, summer still needs some structure and AI can help. Voice assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri can become your family’s digital camp counselor, helping with daily routines, setting reminders for sunscreen and hydration or even organizing chores with reward systems.

Smart speakers can also be programmed to suggest a daily activity or prompt. For example, “Hey Google, give us a family fun idea for today” might return a suggestion like a dance party, scavenger hunt or backyard picnic.

For teens and tweens with phones or tablets, AI calendar tools like TimeHero or Clockwise can encourage time management and goal setting, gently nudging them to mix fun with productivity — even during summer break.

Smart tech for a simple summer

AI isn’t about turning summer into a science project. It’s about working smarter, not harder, to carve out more moments of joy, connection and discovery. With just a handful of tools, families can enhance their summers without over-scheduling or over-spending.

So whether you’re planning day trips around Macon, throwing together a last-minute dinner with pantry staples or helping your kids create a comic book about their backyard adventures, consider letting AI do some of the heavy lifting. You might just find that a smarter summer is a happier summer.
