Thanksgiving turkey drives and meal giveaways in Macon

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, local organizations and businesses are gearing up to give back to the community. Here’s a list of locations throughout Macon where folks can find a meal kits or a hot plate of food for the holiday season.

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and folks all over Macon will be looking forward to a perfectly cooked turkey dinner, complete with all the classic fixins’. Organizations throughout the community are hosting turkey drives or meal giveaways to make sure everyone has a full plate for Thanksgiving. 

Here’s a list of turkey drives and meal giveaways by organizations and businesses throughout Macon.

Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia

In addition to the 1,800 pre-reserved Thanksgiving meals that will be delivered to apartments and senior living facilities, Rescue mission will also give out at least 250 warm meals on Thanksgiving morning. 

At 10 a.m., Rescue Mission volunteers will hand out meals in downtown Macon at Loaves and Fishes Ministries, 651 MLK Jr. Blvd. 

Volunteers spend a week preparing the turkeys, sides and desserts, according to development director Amy Walker, then at 6:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, a group of 20 volunteers will begin making the plates.

Rescue Mission will also hand out roughly 200 coats, as well as hygiene kits to folks who stop by. 

The organization is still looking for volunteers for its Christmas Eve meal. To volunteer, call development assistant, Patti Stevenson 478-743-5445 ext 403

Feed the City

Middle Georgia nonprofit Feed the City will give away 1,500 turkeys and other bags of food Saturday, Nov. 23 as part of the organization’s drive-thru event at Hope Church, 204 Sullivan Rd, Fort Valley, Ga.

 Feed the City raised donations to buy bulk quantities of turkeys, and also partnered with entities like the Houston County school system to collect food donations.

Folks can show up between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. to receive a turkey or other food to make a Thanksgiving meal.

Rotary Downtown Macon

The Rotary club will give out more than 100 Thanksgiving meal boxes on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Capital City Bank 325 fifth St. 

Each box will contain all the ingredients for families to enjoy a hot Thanksgiving meal, including a turkey, butter, stuffing mix, aluminum baking pans, canned sweet potatoes, apples, corn muffin mix and canned green beans. 

The boxes will be given away from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Capital City Bank.

Forrest B. Jonson and Associates will give away 1,200 hot meals the day before Thanksgiving, Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. in four different locations around Macon.

The food is catered by S&S Cafeteria and Anderson’s Diner. 

In past years, folks have cleared out the food within the first hour, director of marketing and communications Shevis Perry said. 

The locations are Burdell Hunt Elementary School, Southwest High School, L.H. Williams Elementary School and Unionville Baptist Church.

It has been a little over a decade since Forrest B. Johnson and Associates began hosting its annual meal giveaway as a means of giving back to the community. 

“Mr, Johnson comes out of a single parent household — his mother raised him,” Perry said. “But his mother instilled those moral values within him that when he does become successful in life to make sure that he gives back in return.

Mikado Baptist Church

The congregation at Mikado has put together bags of food — canned veggies, cake mix, corn bread mix, cranberry sauce, box mac and cheese and stuffing — along with turkeys to hand out on Saturday Nov. 23 in the church parking lot, 6751 Houston Rd. 

Nearly four dozen volunteers from the congregation will hand out hundreds of food bags, turkeys and bibles from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Goldmouf Turkey Drive

 Mogul Empire and Teeger Entertainment will have a turkey drive at Henderson Stadium, 2172 Anthony Rd, Tuesday, Nov. 26. The event will be hosted by Power 107.1 FM DJ AD and will start at 1 p.m.

Not only will 200 turkeys be given away, but there will be a bounce house, food truck and face painting.  Macon-Bibb Mayor Lester Miller and the Macon-Bibb commission and the Macon Rampage will make an appearance.

Kingdom Life Annual Thanksgiving Feast

There will be free turkey and trimmings at the Rosa Jackson Community Center, 1211 Maynard St, on Tuesday, Nov. 26. 

Folks who stop by at 6 p.m. can enjoy food, live music and fellowship.
