Carrying the torch: Southwest High School basketball’s legacy lives on
Southwest senior Brandon Ashley wrote about his team, their coaches and the school’s history.

Editor’s Note: This article was written in December by Brandon Ashley, a senior at Southwest and a player on the basketball team. The Melody agreed to publish the story ahead of the Patriots’ GHSA Class A-Division I State Championship game appearance.
Located in the heart of Macon, Georgia, Southwest High School stands as a beacon of basketball greatness. The echoes of its storied past, led by Coach Donald Richardson, still resound within its gymnasium. The program’s legacy, marked by multiple state championships and a USA Today national title, continues to thrive under the dedicated stewardship of coaches and players who are committed to upholding its unique and significant tradition.
The current Southwest basketball team, coached by Monquencio Hardnett, is not just playing for wins but for history. Hardnett, a local basketball phenom and son of a former championship team member, embodies the values that Richardson instilled — discipline, teamwork, and the importance of character.
“Our legacy isn’t just about winning; it’s about building character,” Hardnett said. “These young men are part of something bigger than themselves. They’re continuing a story that started long before them.”
Mentorship and Legacy
Hardnett isn’t alone in his mission. Athletic Director Joseph Dupree, a former player under Richardson, ensures that today’s players understand the historical significance of wearing the Southwest jersey. “Coach Richardson’s emphasis on discipline and teamwork is something I carry into every practice,” Dupree said. “The history of Southwest basketball is a story of perseverance, and I make sure the players understand that.”
Coach Ron Hill, who played for Richardson and now leads the girls’ basketball program, echoed these sentiments. “As someone who played for Coach Richardson, I know the value of hard work and respect for the game,” Hill said. “Our focus is on developing well-rounded athletes who succeed on and off the court.”

Challenges and Opportunities
Maintaining a legacy comes with its own set of challenges. Today’s players face the pressures of living up to the championship expectations, balancing academics with athletics, and navigating the distractions of modern life, including the influence of social media.
“We teach our players to embrace pressure as a privilege—it’s a sign of the program’s success,” Hill said.
Despite the challenges, the opportunities for the current team are immense. Dupree, Hill, and Hardnett’s mentorship provides players with a strong foundation to succeed not just in basketball but in life. Equally important is the unwavering support of the community, which has been a cornerstone of the program’s success. This support is not just appreciated but vital for the team’s continued success.

What’s at Stake
The stakes for the current team go beyond wins and losses. Their success could bring increased resources, scholarships, and opportunities for the school, while continuing to inspire pride and a sense of ownership in the Macon community. This is our team, our legacy, and our success.
“These young men have the opportunity to write their own chapter in this story, and that’s both exciting and challenging,” Hardnett said.
A Call to Action
The Southwest High School basketball program is more than a team; it’s a community effort. Students, parents, and alumni are not just encouraged, but crucial in rallying behind the team by attending games, volunteering, and supporting fundraising initiatives. Your support is what makes this team and its legacy thrive.
“Southwest High School basketball is about family,” Dupree said. “We win together, lose together, and grow together.”
As the season progresses, Southwest High School’s players carry not just the ball but the weight of history, proving that the torch Coach Richardson lit decades ago continues to burn brightly.
